Day 25 – Mar. 02 Brisbane, Australia

Victoria Bridge, Brisbane

The QV docked in Moreton Bay for our visit to Brisbane, the capital of the Australian State of Oueensland.  To reach Brisbane we were shuttled by bus inland, a trip that took about 55 minutes.  Brisbane sits on both banks of the Brisbane River.

Our bus dropped us on Ann Street at the top of King George Square.  Although Brisbane has a population of 2.4 million people, we were told that downtown was quite walkable. So, that’s what we decided to do.  First we walked through King George Square, which is also called ANZAC Square in honor of the city’s veterans of the Australia-New Zealand Army Corp.

From the foot of King George Square we walked down Edward Street to the post office where we did some business.  Then we walked around the corner and into the Queen Street Mall.  We wandered through the mall for about a block and then detoured a couple of blocks over to the City Hall.  The City Hall is a beautiful old building with a clock tower.  On the third floor is the Brisbane Museum.  So, we went in and had a look.

After leaving City Hall, we crossed the square and had lunch at the ‘Pig and Whistle Pub’. Then it was back to Queen Street.  We walked down Queen past the library and the old Queensland Treasury (now a casino) to the Victoria Bridge.  Here we crossed the Brisbane River to the South Bank.

The South Bank is the city’s culture, education, recreation and entertainment center.  Within a few blocks are the Queensland Performing Arts Complex, the State Library, the Queensland Museum, The Queensland Art Gallery, the Queensland Maritime Museum, the Queensland Theatre Company,Opera Queensland and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Center.Just East of all that culture is the South Bank Park.

After walking around the South Bank, we returned across the Victoria Bridge and walked East a couple of blocks to visit the Comissariat Store.  This is one of the last two convict built buildings linking Brisbane with its past.  Originally, Brisbane was a prison colony.

Finally we returned to King George Square to meet our shuttle.
