On our second day in Venice, Frances and I decided to set out on our own. So, we caught the shuttle from the cruise dock to Saint Mark’s Square. Our first goal was to visit Santa Maria della Salute Church (The Church of Our Lady of Health or Salvation) on the other side of the Grand Canal. So, again wound our way through the narrow streets and alleyways of Venice to the Accademia Bridge. This time, instead of turning right for the Gallerie, we turned left for the point where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal. Along the way we passed the Peggy Guggenheim Collection which we noted because it was also on Frances’ list. Eventually we arrived at Santa Maria Della Salute. After exploring the church, the Dogana Da Mar, Guggenheim Museum and surrounding buildings, we headed back to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
Located in Peggy Guggenheim’s former Venetian home is an extensive collection of modern art. We spent time viewing Ms. Guggenheim’s impressive collection. Then we had a snack in the Cafe and browsed the museum shop.
After leaving Peggy Guggenheim’s we wandered through some shops on our way back to the Accademia Bridge. We found a nice little print shop where I bought a tee shirt and another shop selling Murano Glass where we also made some purchases. After crossing the bridge we began wandering back. We came upon a church that Frances found interesting. She went in and took some pictures. When she came out we realized it was past 1:00 and we were across the square from the ristorante that we ate in the day before. So, we went back and had lunch.
After lunch we went back to Saint Mark’s Square (which was much less crowded than the day before) and from there to our shuttle back to the Pacific Princess.
Later that day, we were again invited to join our friends on their veranda to view the ‘sail away’ through the Giudecca Canal to the Grand Canal and out to the Adriatic Sea …
